Nitzschia sturionis
ALSO KNOWN AS: Sturgeon gill trematode
Nitzschia sturionis is a trematode parasite that infests the skin and gills of sturgeon species. Infestations can lead to skin lesions progressing from reddened areas to hemorrhagic ulcers and depigmentation. Heavily infested fish may exhibit reduced weight gain or weight loss. The parasite has been observed to increase in intensity when fish are held in captivity for extended periods. Treatment with praziquantel baths has been effective in managing infestations.
Distribution: Reported in Atlantic sturgeon in Chesapeake Bay; potential distribution in other regions inhabited by sturgeon.
Hosts: Atlantic sturgeon (Acipenser oxyrinchus oxyrinchus); potential for other sturgeon species.
Detection Methods: Visual inspection; microscopic examination.
Target Tissue: Skin, gills.
