Erythrocytic Inclusion Body Syndrome
Also known as: EIBS
Erythrocytic Inclusion Body Syndrome (EIBS) is a viral disease affecting salmonid fishes. It is characterized by the presence of distinctive inclusion bodies in red blood cells, which can be observed under a microscope. Although the causative agent is an undescribed virus, the disease is well-recognized in diagnostic settings. Environmental stressors and host health may influence the severity of outbreaks. The condition is often subclinical but can impact fish health and performance under certain circumstances.
Distribution: Reported in salmonid populations, particularly in hatcheries and aquaculture settings.
Detection Methods: Microscopic examination – histology (blood smear)
Hosts: Salmonid fishes
Target Tissue: Blood
