Also known as: MBV
Monodon baculovirus is a viral pathogen infecting the giant tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon), commonly found in Asia. It infects epithelial cells of the hepatopancreas and midgut, forming distinctive occlusion bodies. Although MBV is often associated with low to moderate mortality, it can weaken shrimp and make them more susceptible to other infections. MBV transmission occurs vertically and horizontally.
Distribution: Asia, especially in shrimp farming regions
Hosts: Giant tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon)
Detection Methods: Histopathology; PCR – unspecified
Target Tissue: Hepatopancreas, midgut
