Sphaerospora elegans is a myxosporean parasite commonly found in the kidneys of threespine sticklebacks. It is widely distributed across the northern hemisphere and can cause mild to severe kidney infections. While infections are often subclinical, heavy infestations may lead to renal dysfunction.
